My random name generator needs a look-and-feel overhaul. I'd like to invite any and all to contribute. The contest will end in one month (Mon, November 24 -- my birthday). Here are the rules:

  • The base page is at: http://www.ajs.com/~ajs/cgi-bin/mkname.cgi
  • The submissions must be sent via email (zip or tgz attachments are fine) with a subject of "mkname contest submission" to mkname@ajs.com
  • No server-side code may be included.
  • You may submit a stand-alone CSS file or a re-written version of the base HTML along with the CSS file(s) required by it. If you re-write any of the text of the page, this will be considered questionable, but may be allowed.
  • Any images or other files required must be supplied
  • All submissions must be placed under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike 3.0 license. No restrictions may be placed on submitted files beyond this, or they will be disqualified.
  • Total submission size should be less than 100KiB of HTML+CSS and less than 100KiB of additional images, but exceptional submissions will be considered
  • You may place (in a small font relative to the rest of the page) your name and/or company name in the lower-right corner of the page with or without a link to your site. This will be retained in the final version, though exact text may be modified as needed.
  • The winner will be selected under purely subjective criteria, but be aware that simplicity is highly valued by the site maintainers.
  • Keep in mind that the most costly thing about these pages is generating the names, so any dynamic features that require more names to be generated more often would be considered harmful unless they substantially improve the site (e.g. caching all of the different languages ahead of time would be bad).
May the best submission win!
